About The Book
The second of thirty-seven books of Ibn al-ʿArabī’s magnum opus al-Futūḥāt al-Makkīyah, translated and conveyed by Shuʿayb Dr Eric Winkel.
Chapter 2 continues from the letters to the vowels to the word and the phrases. In Chapter 8, we hear wondrous stories of the Vast Earth, which was made from the tiny portion of clay left over from the creation of the date-palm, which in turn was made from the tiny portion of clay left over from the creation of AdamEve. In this Vast Earth, this Kaʿbah is one of fourteen Houses, and in each one of the seven Earths, ‘there is a creation like us, up to there being in them an Ibn ʿAbbās just like me’.

About the author
Ibn Arabi: Muhyi al-Din Muhammad ibn Ali ibn Arabi al-Hatimi al-Taʾi (560-638 AH / 1165-1240 CE) is among the most influential figures in the history of Islamic spirituality, revered by later generations as al-Shaykh al-Akbar, "the Greatest Master." He was born in Murcia in al-Andalus (Muslim Spain) and raised in Seville, where he received a broad education before turning fully to the path of the Sufis as a young man. From the 1190s onward he traveled across the Islamic world, through North Africa to Makka, then Baghdad, Anatolia, and other centers of learning, before settling in Damascus, where he taught, wrote, and was buried. He was one of the most prolific authors of the tradition, and two works stand at the center of his legacy: the monumental al-Futuhat al-Makkiyya ("The Makkan Revelations"), begun in Makka, and Fusus al-Hikam ("The Bezels of Wisdom"), a concentrated meditation on wisdom as embodied in the prophets. His articulation of the unity of being (wahdat al-wujud) and of the Perfect Human (al-insan al-kamil), in whom the divine names are fully realized, reshaped metaphysics, poetry, and devotion from the Maghrib to South and Central Asia. Alongside these great treatises he left prayers, litanies, and contemplative manuals, several of which appear here in English, that continue to nourish seekers today.
About the translator
Shuayb Eric Winkel: Shuayb Eric Winkel is an American scholar and translator whose life's work is the first complete English rendering of the Futuhat al-Makkiyya, the monumental "Meccan Openings" of Muhyiddin Ibn al-ʿArabi (d. 638 AH / 1240 CE), the Shaykh al-Akbar. Winkel studied religion at Haverford College and South Asian studies at the University of Pennsylvania, and completed a doctorate at the University of South Carolina. He served as a Senior Research Fellow at the Institute of Advanced Islamic Studies in Malaysia and as a Senior Fulbright Scholar in Indonesia before dedicating himself fully, from 2012 onward, to the Futuhat Project. The Futuhat comprises thirty-seven books in all, and Winkel's translation, "The Openings Revealed in Makkah," presents them in successive volumes with detailed commentary, drawing on years of close work with classical Arabic and with the manuscript tradition. Volume one appeared in 2019. His earlier publications include "Islam and the Living Law: The Ibn al-ʿArabi Approach" and a translation of the "Mysteries of Purity," along with the recent "An Illustrated Guide to Ibn Arabi." His fascination with the Andalusian master began in his youth, and the translation has since become a collaborative undertaking with editors, a publisher, and proofreaders supporting the steady release of new volumes.
