About The Book

Imam Hussain (may Allah be pleased with him) was a great character who epitomised the essence of Islam in thought, words and actions. In all corners of the Muslim world, his name lives on to represent bravery, piety and selflessness.

This booklet highlights the one event that Imam Hussain (may Allah be pleased with him) was best known for, his martyrdom in Karbala. From the earliest and most reliable sources, this paper charts the events leading up to the fateful battlefield, his martyrdom and the aftermath of his sacrifice.

At the end of the work, there are several appendixes related to the event, such as 'was Yazid forgiven?' and the superiority of the Day of Ashura.

This work is a brief, chronological account of the events of Imam Hussain, may Allah be pleased with him, based on reliable, Islamic sources. The classical sources used for this work are;

• Tarikh al-Khulafa. Imam Jalal al-Din Abd al-Rahman ibn Abu Bakr al-Suyuti (d. 911 A.H./1505 C.E.).
• Tarikh al-Islam. Hafiz Shams al-Din Muhammad ibn Ahmad ibn Uthman al-Dhahabi (d. 748 A.H./1348 C.E.).
• Tarikh al-Tabari. Abu Ja'far Muhammad Jarir al-Tabari (d. 923/1517).
• Al-Bidaya wa al-Nihaya. Hafiz ibn Kathir (d. 774/1373).

About The Authors

Allama Mohammad Shahid Raza Na'imi OBE is the Chief Imam of the Islamic Centre, Leicester. Allama Sahib graduated in Science from the University of Agra (India) in 1969 and post-graduated from the University of Meerut in 1974, He travelled to Moradabad for higher Islamic education leading to a degree of Alim (MA Islamic Studies) from the Jamia Na'imiyya (an Islamic college established in 1909) in 1976 where his Father Mawlana Mufti Habibullah (1917-1975) was Shaykh-al-Hadith and Principal. He is also the President of the World Islamic Mission (European Region), Founder Trustee of the British Muslim Forum, the Director of the Muslim Food Board UK.

Dr. Hafiz Ather Hussain Al-Azhari is currently an Imam and writer based in Leicester, UK. He studied at Jamia al-Karam, Dar al-Ulum Muhammdia Ghousia (Pakistan), al-Azhar University (Egypt) and at the University of Birmingham. Whilst studying in Pakistan, he was honoured with being one of the Last students of Zia al-Ummah Pir Muhammad Karam Shah al-Azhari. He has written many books on Islam, including Towards Understanding Aqidah in collaboration with Allama Shahid Raza Na'imi.
