Born in Caucasia, he served as Deputy Shaykh al-Islam of the Ottoman state in its final years, and after the fall of the empire settled in Cairo where he became the supreme defender of the traditional Sunni-Hanafi-Maturidi-Sufi heritage against the rising Salafi current.
