About
al-Allama Abd al-Ghani b. Talib al-Ghunaymi al-Maydani (1222-1298 AH / 1807-1881 CE) rahimahullah was among the leading Hanafi masters of Damascus in the late nineteenth century. He studied under Ibn Abidin, the greatest Hanafi jurist of the Ottoman Arab world, and became a continuator of the distinguished Damascene late-Hanafi scholarly tradition. His al-Lubab fi Sharh al-Kitab is a commentary on the Mukhtasar al-Quduri that proceeds through al-Quduri's dense text section by section, unpacking technical terminology, identifying legal principles, and providing the contemporary elucidations required by the advanced student. For over a century and a half al-Lubab has been the primary teaching companion to the Quduri text in the Damascene Hanafi tradition. Beyond al-Lubab, his glosses on multiple Hanafi texts continue to be referenced in working Hanafi scholarship.
