About
Abd Allah ibn Abd al-Rahman ibn Abi Bakr ibn Muhammad al-Hajj Bafadl al-Hadrami al-Tarimi (d. 918 AH / 1513 CE) was one of the foremost Shafi'i jurists of the Hadramawt region of Yemen. He is principally known for two foundational works: al-Muqaddimah al-Hadramiyyah (also called al-Mukhtasar al-Kabir or Masa'il al-Ta'lim), a concise and precise compendium of the essential rulings of worship covering purification, prayer, zakat, fasting, and pilgrimage according to the Shafi'i school; and al-Mukhtasar al-Latif (al-Mukhtasar al-Saghir), a shorter abridgment of the same material. The al-Muqaddimah al-Hadramiyyah became one of the standard beginner texts in Shafi'i fiqh across the Islamic world, particularly in the Hadramawt, Southeast Asia, and East Africa, and has attracted numerous commentaries over the centuries. His family nisba 'Bafadl' (short for 'Banu Fadl') identifies him as belonging to a well-established Arab scholarly lineage in the Hadramawt region. He was from Tarim, one of the historical centers of Islamic learning in Yemen. His works remain foundational references in traditional Shafi'i education.
