About
Imam Abu Ishaq Ibrahim b. Ali al-Shirazi rahimahullah (393-476 AH / 1003-1083 CE) was the foremost Shafii scholar of the fifth Hijri century, recognized as the imam of the Shafii school in his age. He was associated with the founding of the celebrated Nizamiyya madrasa in Baghdad, the flagship institution of the Nizamiyya network established under the Saljuq vizier Nizam al-Mulk, where al-Shirazi served as a leading teacher. His works in Shafii jurisprudence became foundational references within the school. Among them, Kitab al-Tanbih fi al-Fiqh al-Shafii holds a place as one of the five canonical matn texts of the Shafii madhhab - alongside al-Rafi'i's al-Muharrar and al-Nawawi's Minhaj al-Talibin. Composed in Baghdad in the fifth century AH, it presents the Shafii school's positions on worship and transactions in concise, pedagogically structured Arabic prose suited to memorization and teaching. He also authored al-Muhadhdhab, another major work in Shafii jurisprudence.
