Afzal Ismail is a contemporary South African scholar and author writing in the traditional seminary (Deobandi) milieu of Johannesburg. Holding the title Mawlana, which marks formal training in the classical Islamic sciences, he is associated with Muslims at Work Publications, a South African house in the Johannesburg and Heidelberg area, where he has served as compiler and general editor. He is best known for works that distill the Islamic heritage into accessible, character-forming reading. His Pearls from the Path series, in three volumes, gathers instructive anecdotes from Islamic history, while Humorous Anecdotes: From the Lighter Side of Islamic History (1434 AH / 2013, published 2015) teaches adab with warmth and wit. He has also written Golden Pages from Madinah Munawwarah and served as general editor of an English commentary on Imam al-Nawawi's Riyad al-Salihin, alongside titles on contemporary concerns such as Muslim Women and Modern Challenges. His writing aims to make the moral and historical riches of the tradition approachable for ordinary readers, younger audiences, and families. Detailed biographical particulars beyond his published output are not widely documented. true
