About
Shaykh Ahmad b. Umar al-Shatiri rahimahullah (1312-1360 AH / 1894-1941 CE) was a Hadhrami Shafii scholar associated with the traditional Islamic learning center of Tarim in Hadramawt, Yemen. He is known for al-Yaqut al-Nafis fi Madhhab Ibn Idris, a Shafii fiqh primer he composed specifically for the Ba'Alawi pedagogical tradition of Tarim. The work draws directly on the foundational Hadhrami Shafii texts - al-Muqaddima al-Hadramiyya of Ba Fadl, Bushra al-Karim of Ba'shan, and al-Manhaj al-Qawim of Ibn Hajar al-Haytami - and presents the authoritative positions of the Shafii school in clear contemporary Arabic accessible to students. The text became a core matn of the Tarim curriculum. Al-Shatiri also authored Nayl al-Raja bi-Sharh Safinat al-Naja, a commentary on the widely-studied primer Safinat al-Naja.
