About
Akbar S. Ahmed is an anthropologist, Islamic scholar, poet, playwright, and filmmaker whom the BBC has described as the 'world's leading authority on contemporary Islam.' He currently holds the Ibn Khaldun Chair of Islamic Studies at American University in Washington, DC, and has previously taught at the University of Cambridge, Princeton University, and Harvard University. He served as Pakistani High Commissioner to the United Kingdom and Ireland. His creative and scholarly output spans multiple genres: his 'Jinnah Quartet' comprised the feature film Jinnah, a documentary film, an academic monograph, and a graphic novel devoted to Pakistan's founding father Muhammad Ali Jinnah. For Brookings Institution Press he completed four books examining the relationship between the West and the Muslim world, two of which were accompanied by documentary films. He continues to research and write on how civilizations can coexist, with a forthcoming work titled The Mingling of the Oceans.
