About
Abu Abd Allah Muhammad b. Abd Allah al-Hakim al-Nisaburi (321-405 AH / 933-1014 CE), rahimahullah, was one of the foremost hadith scholars of the classical Sunni tradition. Born in Nisabur, Khurasan, he held the office of judge and spent his career in the study and transmission of hadith. His magnum opus, al-Mustadrak ala al-Sahihayn, is a multi-volume hadith collection in which he gathered narrations he considered to meet the standards of Imams al-Bukhari and Muslim but which they had not included in their Sahihs. The Mustadrak became an indispensable reference work in Sunni hadith scholarship and was critically reviewed by his contemporary al-Dhahabi, whose annotations are standardly printed alongside the text. Al-Hakim also composed Ma'rifat Ulum al-Hadith, an early systematic treatment of hadith sciences.
