About
Shams al-Din Muhammad b. Ahmad al-Khatib al-Shirbini (d. 977 AH / 1570 CE), rahimahullah, was one of the foremost Shafi'i scholars of the Ottoman-era Azhari tradition. A student of Shafi'i fiqh at al-Azhar, he produced several major jurisprudential works that became pillars of later Shafi'i teaching. His 10-volume commentary on Abu Ishaq al-Shirazi's al-Tanbih, titled al-Najm al-Thaqib, is a comprehensive exposition of the Shafi'i school's foundational legal text. He is equally renowned for Mughni al-Muhtaj ila Marifat Alfaz al-Minhaj, a detailed commentary on al-Nawawi's Minhaj al-Talibin that remains among the most consulted references in Shafi'i jurisprudence. Al-Shirbini also composed al-Iqna fi Hall Alfaz Abi Shuja, a widely taught mid-level Shafi'i manual.
