About
Abu al-Hasan Ali b. Muhammad al-Mawardi (364-450 AH / 974-1058 CE) rahimahullah was one of the foremost Shafi'i jurists of the fifth Islamic century and a towering figure in classical Islamic scholarship. Based in Baghdad, he attained the highest judicial office under the Abbasid caliphate, serving as aqda al-qudat (chief of all judges). He was a master of fiqh, political theory, ethics, and Qur'anic exegesis. Among his enduring contributions are Adab al-Dunya wa al-Din, a celebrated work on the ethics of personal and communal life that remains a staple of Islamic ethical literature, and al-Ahkam al-Sultaniyya, a landmark treatise on Islamic governance and constitutional theory that has shaped Muslim political thought for nearly a millennium. His breadth of scholarship across jurisprudence, politics, and ethics marks him as one of the most versatile scholars of the classical tradition.
