About
Al-Sharif al-Jurjani rahimahullah (Ali ibn Muhammad al-Sayyid al-Sharif al-Jurjani, d. 816 AH / 1413 CE) was one of the foremost scholars of the late medieval Islamic world, distinguished in theology ('aqida), jurisprudence, logic, philosophy, and Arabic linguistics. Born in Jurjan (in present-day Iran), he studied under leading scholars of his era, including Sa'd al-Din al-Taftazani, with whom he engaged in celebrated scholarly debates. He held positions at learned courts across Transoxiana and taught in Samarkand under the patronage of Timur. His most celebrated work is the Kitab al-Ta'rifat, a comprehensive dictionary of technical terms across the Islamic sciences. His contributions to Arabic grammar, including the primer Nahw Mir, became foundational texts in the Hanafi madrasa curriculum across South Asia and Central Asia.
