About
Hasan ibn Ammar al-Shurunbulali rahimahullah (994-1069 AH / 1586-1659 CE) was born in a village in Upper Egypt. His father brought him to Cairo at the age of six, where he memorized the Qur'an and subsequently studied the Islamic sciences under numerous scholars. He studied Qur'anic recitation under Shaykh Muhammad al-Hamawi and Shaykh Abd al-Rahman al-Masiri, and Hanafi jurisprudence under Imam Abdullah al-Nahriri, Allama Muhammad al-Mahabbi, and Shaykh Ali ibn Ghanim al-Maqdisi. He then enrolled in al-Azhar, at that time the foremost center for advanced Islamic learning, where he excelled beyond his peers, distinguishing himself in juridical passages and maxims. His reputation spread throughout the Muslim world and he became one of its most renowned jurisconsults. He was appointed professor at al-Azhar, where many students later became notable scholars of law in their own right. His two most celebrated works - Nur al-Idah (The Light of Clarification) and Maraqi al-Sa'adat (Ascent to Felicity) - became foundational texts in the teaching of Hanafi fiqh and continue to be studied across traditional seminaries to this day.
