About
Abu Ja'far Muhammad ibn Jarir al-Tabari rahimahullah (224-310 AH / 839-923 CE) was one of the preeminent scholars of the formative Islamic tradition, equally distinguished in Qur'anic exegesis, hadith, and history. Born in Amul in the region of Tabaristan (present-day northern Iran), he traveled widely in pursuit of knowledge, studying in Iraq, Syria, and Egypt, and settled ultimately in Baghdad. He studied under leading scholars of his age, including students of Imam Ahmad ibn Hanbal. His most celebrated works are the monumental tafsir 'Jami' al-Bayan 'an Ta'wil Ay al-Qur'an' - known in English as the Comprehensive Exposition of the Interpretation of the Verses of the Qur'an - and 'Tarikh al-Umam wa'l-Muluk', a universal history from creation to his own era. Both works have remained foundational references across the Islamic scholarly tradition. He also held an independent juridical position (the Jariri madhhab), though it did not survive as a distinct school.
