About
Izz al-Din Ibrahim b. Abd al-Wahhab al-Zanjani (d. 656 AH / 1258 CE), rahimahullah, was a classical Arab grammarian of the 7th century AH. His most celebrated contribution is al-Tasrif al-Izzi (also known as Tasrif al-Zanjani), a brief but comprehensive matn on Arabic morphology (sarf - the science of word forms and their derivational patterns). The text's compact and precise formulation made it an ideal teaching primer and it attracted a substantial commentary tradition, including the well-known Sharh Tasrif al-Izzi attributed to Sa'd al-Din al-Taftazani. For centuries, al-Tasrif al-Izzi served as a foundational entry point into the science of Arabic morphology in traditional madrasa curricula across the Islamic world.
