About
Alan Jones is Professor Emeritus of Classical Arabic at Oxford University, where he taught Arabic for many years and built a distinguished reputation both for his command of the Arabic language and for his scholarly work on the Qur'an. His academic output spans the classical and Andalusian Arabic literary traditions. He is the author of Early Arabic Poetry, a scholarly study of the pre-Islamic poetic canon; The Jaysh al-Tawshih of Lisan al-Din Ibn al-Khatib, a critical edition of an Andalusian anthology; and Romance in Kharjas in Andalusian Arabic Muwassah Poetry, a study of the hybrid Arabic-Romance lyric tradition. His pedagogical work Arabic Through the Qur'an uses the text of the Qur'an as the primary vehicle for teaching classical Arabic grammar and vocabulary, making it a distinctive resource for students of both Arabic and Quranic studies.
