About
Born in Amman on October 15, 1966, Ghazi ibn Muhammad ibn Talal is a Jordanian scholar of the ruling Hashemite house, a nephew of the late King Hussein and first cousin to King Abdullah II, whom he serves as chief advisor for religious and cultural affairs and personal envoy. He read comparative literature at Princeton, graduating with highest honors in 1988, completed a doctorate at Cambridge in 1993, and later earned a second doctorate in Islamic philosophy at al-Azhar in Cairo.

He is most widely known as the author of "A Common Word Between Us and You" (2007), the open letter from Muslim scholars to Christian leaders worldwide that grounded dialogue in the shared command to love God and one's neighbor, and as the author of the United Nations General Assembly resolution that established World Interfaith Harmony Week in 2010. He founded the World Islamic Sciences and Education University and launched the Great Tafsir Project, a large online collection of Qurʾanic commentary.

His own books include "Love in the Holy Qurʾan," drawn from his al-Azhar doctorate and tracing the Qurʾan's vocabulary of love through its many stages, "A Thinking Person's Guide to Islam," and "War and Peace in Islam: The Uses and Abuses of Jihad." His work joins traditional learning to interreligious peacemaking, and he remains an active voice for the classical Sunni mainstream.
