About
Imam Abu Abd Allah Muhammad b. Abd Allah b. Malik al-Andalusi al-Jayyaniy al-Shafi'i (600-672 AH / 1203-1274 CE), rahimahullah, was one of the greatest Arab grammarians of the classical period. Born in Jaen (Jayyane) in al-Andalus, he migrated east and eventually settled in Damascus, where he taught Arabic grammar and related sciences until his death. He held a teaching post at the Dar al-Hadith al-Ashrafiyya in Damascus. His masterwork is the Alfiyyat Ibn Malik (also called al-Khulasa al-Alfiyya), a poem of one thousand verses that systematically covers the rules of Arabic grammar and morphology. The Alfiyya attracted an unrivaled commentary tradition - most famously by Ibn Aqil (Sharh Ibn Aqil) and Ibn Hisham (Awdah al-Masalik) - and has remained the central grammar text in traditional Islamic education for over seven centuries.
