About
Imam Muhammad b. Qasim al-Ghazzi (859-918 AH / 1455-1512 CE), rahimahullah, was a Shafi'i jurist and a recognized authority within the traditional Sunni discipline of fiqh. His enduring contribution to Islamic scholarship is Fath al-Qarib al-Mujib fi Sharh Alfaz al-Taqrib, a systematic commentary on the Matn Abi Shuja' (known as al-Ghaya wa al-Taqrib). The commentary proceeds through Abu Shuja's text passage by passage, unpacking technical legal terminology and presenting the authoritative Shafi'i positions in clear pedagogical prose. For five centuries Fath al-Qarib has served as the standard teaching companion to the Matn Abi Shuja' in Shafi'i madrasas, and it continues to be studied at the introductory and intermediate levels across the Islamic world.
