About
Imam Ja'far ibn Muhammad al-Sadiq rahimahullah (83-148 AH / 702-765 CE) was among the most celebrated scholars of the early Islamic period. A descendant of the Prophet ﷺ through Imam Ali ibn Abi Talib on his father's side, and through his mother a descendant of the first Caliph Abu Bakr al-Siddiq, he embodied a unique convergence of prophetic lineages. He was a prolific teacher of hadith, Islamic jurisprudence, and spiritual wisdom, and his legal school, known as Ja'fari jurisprudence, bears his name. Revered by both Sunni and Shi'a Muslims for his profound scholarship, piety, and mastery of the religious sciences, he attracted students from across the Islamic world. Among the works attributed to him is the earliest extant mystical commentary on the Qur'an, Spiritual Gems (Lata'if al-Isharat), which reflects his deep engagement with Qur'anic spirituality and esoteric interpretation.
