About
Shaykh Mahmud Shabistari rahimahullah (1288-1340 CE) was a Persian Sufi poet and scholar who lived and worked in Tabriz, the renowned cultural center of northwestern Iran during the Ilkhanid period. He is best known for his masterwork Gulshan-i-Raz (The Secret Garden), a celebrated Persian Sufi poem composed in the masnavi form. Written in response to a series of questions posed by a fellow Sufi from Khurasan, the poem addresses the deepest questions of mystical knowledge, divine love, the nature of the soul, and the spiritual path. Compact yet profound, Gulshan-i-Raz became one of the most widely read, memorized, and commented-upon texts in the Persian Sufi literary tradition, attracting major commentaries across the centuries. Shabistari lived during a period when Tabriz served as a flourishing hub of Islamic scholarship, culture, and Sufi intellectual life.
