About
Imam Muhammad ibn Abd al-Baqi al-Zurqani al-Maliki rahimahullah (1055-1122 AH / 1645-1710 CE) was an Egyptian Maliki scholar and leading authority in hadith in the late eleventh and early twelfth century AH. He is among the most prominent hadith scholars of the Ottoman-era Egyptian scholarly tradition. His magnum opus is Sharh al-Mawahib al-Laduniyya ala al-Mawahib al-Laduniyya, a twelve-volume commentary on the celebrated prophetic biography by Imam Ahmad al-Qastallani, which stands as one of the most substantial commentary works produced in the later Sunni hadith tradition. He also wrote Sharh al-Bayquniyya, a commentary on the thirty-four-verse rajaz poem of Shaykh Umar al-Bayquni (d. 1080 AH), which catalogs the types of hadith in a single verse each. Al-Zurqani's commentary works through every category - sahih, hasan, daif, marfu, mawquf, maqtu, musnad, mursal, munqati, mudallis, shadh, munkar, and others - defining each and clarifying the relationships between them for students beginning the study of hadith terminology.
