About
Wali al-Din Muhammad ibn Abdullah al-Khatib al-Tibrizi (d. 741 AH / 1340 CE), rahimahullah, was a Shafi'i hadith scholar associated with the town of Tabriz. He is primarily known for his landmark compilation Mishkat al-Masabih, in which he revised and expanded the Masabih al-Sunna of Imam al-Baghawi (d. 516 AH). Al-Tibrizi added a third category (fasl) to each chapter of al-Baghawi's work, incorporated additional hadith narrations, and indicated the sources and grading of each narration more precisely. The Mishkat al-Masabih subsequently became a cornerstone text in the hadith curriculum of South Asian madrasas (Dars-i-Nizami) and continues to be widely taught and commentated upon. Numerous classical scholars wrote commentaries on the Mishkat, including Mulla Ali al-Qari (d. 1014 AH) in his Mirqat al-Mafatih.
