About
Muhammad ibn Ali al-Nimawi rahimahullah (d. 1322 AH / 1904 CE) was counted among the foremost Indian Muslim scholars of modern times, distinguished above all for the sureness of his critical judgment in hadith sciences and his deep knowledge of hadith narrators and their reliability. He received his training in the Islamic sciences at the feet of some of the most eminent figures of his age, notably the prolific hadith master Abd al-Hayy al-Lakhnawi. The Egyptian scholar Muhammad Zahid al-Kawthari, himself a leading authority of the twentieth century, praised al-Nimawi as a "great scholar." His major work, Athar al-Sunan, is a carefully compiled collection of prophetic hadiths and narrations drawn from the principal canonical collections - the Sahihain, the Sunan books, the Mu'jam and Musnad compilations - with al-Nimawi supplying the source of each hadith and, for narrations outside al-Bukhari and Muslim, a satisfactory evaluation of their chain of transmission. The book's full title, which he himself records, is Athar al-Sunan.
