About
Born in Larnaca, Cyprus (1922-2014 CE), Nazim al-Haqqani was a Turkish Cypriot Sufi teacher who became the most widely recognized representative of the Naqshbandi path in the modern West. As a young man he studied chemical engineering at Istanbul University, then turned fully to the Islamic sciences, training in classical Arabic and jurisprudence and following the Hanafi school in law. In Damascus and Syria he studied with several scholars, and his decisive spiritual bond was with Abdullah al-Faʾiz al-Daghistani, his Naqshbandi master, after whose death in 1973 he led the Naqshbandi-Haqqani order. Settling in Lefke, Cyprus, while keeping ties to Damascus, he began in the mid-1970s to travel each year to Western Europe and later much of the world, where his warmth and multilingual ease drew many seekers, including numerous converts. His discourses, transcribed by students, fill the widely circulated Mercy Oceans series and many related volumes, gathering plain counsel on faith, remembrance of God, and the inner life. Among his best-known deputies were his son and successor Mehmet Adil and his son-in-law Hisham Kabbani, who carried the order's teachings across North America and Europe. He is remembered as a gentle, accessible guide who brought traditional Sufi devotion to a global audience.
