About
Musharraf Hussain, born 1958 CE, is a British Islamic scholar, educator, author, and Qurʾan translator. Born in Pakistan, he came to Halifax, Yorkshire in 1966, where as a boy he memorized the Qurʾan and studied tajwid and basic Arabic, receiving an ijaza in tajwid and qiraʾat in 1976. He read biochemistry at Aston University, earning a doctorate, and worked as a research scientist before dedicating himself to community service around 1990. He then deepened his Islamic studies, training under Justice Pir Muhammad Karam Shah in Pakistan, gaining an ijaza in hadith, and completing a degree in usul al-din at al-Azhar University in Cairo. Hanafi in law and Maturidi in creed, he works in the traditional Sunni mainstream. Since the 1990s he has directed the Karimia Institute in Nottingham, helped found the Jamia al-Karam school, edited the magazine The Invitation, and served as chair of the Christian Muslim Forum from 2008 to 2010. He was awarded an OBE in 2009 for services to community relations and appointed a Deputy Lieutenant of Nottinghamshire. His best-known work is The Majestic Qurʾan, a plain English translation that received an approval certificate from the office of the Grand Mufti of Egypt. He has also written widely for general and younger readers, including Seven Steps to Moral Intelligence, drawing on Imam al-Ghazali, Seven Steps to Spiritual Intelligence, The Five Pillars, and A Guide to Ramadan and Fasting.
