About
A Canadian-Egyptian scholar of the Qurʾan, Mustafa Khattab is best known for The Clear Quran, a contemporary English translation first published in 2015 and prized for its plain, readable rendering aimed at modern readers. He memorized the Qurʾan in his youth and earned a professional ijaza in the Hafs style of recitation, with a chain of transmission reaching back to the Prophet. He holds a PhD, MA, and BA in Islamic studies in English, with honors, from al-Azhar University's Faculty of Languages and Translation, where he served as a lecturer for more than a decade beginning in 2003.
The Clear Quran has been approved by al-Azhar and endorsed by the Canadian Council of Imams and numerous scholars and organizations; in 2020 it became the default English translation on Quran.com, giving it broad reach among English-speaking Muslims. Khattab has since extended the project into a wider series, including The Clear Quran Series for Kids (2020), a children's tafsir, and The Clear Quran Series Dictionary (2021). His other writings include the illustrated children's story Shukran (2020).
Beyond translation, he has worked as an imam in the United States and Canada since 2007, served as Muslim chaplain at Brock University, lectured on Islam at Clemson University, and held a Fulbright interfaith scholarship. He continues to teach and write on the Qurʾan for a general audience.
