About
Dr. Muzaffar Iqbal was born on December 3, 1954, in Lahore, Pakistan, and has lived in Canada since 1979. He holds a Ph.D. in chemistry from the University of Saskatchewan (1983) and taught at the University of Saskatchewan and the University of Wisconsin-Madison before shifting his career toward Islamic scholarship and the history and philosophy of science in Islam. Between 1990 and 1999 he worked in Islamabad as Director of Scientific Information at the Ministerial Standing Committee on Scientific and Technological Cooperation of the OIC, and from 1999 to 2002 he directed the Science and Religion course program at the Center for Theology and Natural Sciences, Berkeley. In 2000 he established the Center for Islam and Science in Alberta, Canada -- renamed the Center for Islamic Sciences in 2013 -- of which he is founding president. He edits the Journal of Islamic Sciences and has authored more than twenty-one books spanning three core areas: the impact of modernity on Muslim intellectual traditions, the role of science and technology in the Muslim world, and Qur'anic studies. His most ambitious project is the Integrated Encyclopedia of the Qur'an (IEQ), a projected seven-volume English-language reference work grounded entirely in classical Muslim scholarship covering fourteen centuries of Qur'anic reflection, the first such work in the English language.
