About
Mufti Naqi Ali Khan rahimahullah (1831-1880) was a distinguished Hanafi jurist, theologian, and scholar of Islamic sciences from Bareilly in northern India. He is renowned as the father and primary formative teacher of Imam Ahmad Raza Khan al-Barelwi, the founder of the Barelvi movement within South Asian Sunni Islam. Mufti Naqi Ali Khan received a thorough grounding in the traditional Islamic sciences and rose to prominence as a religious authority in the Bareilly region during the mid-nineteenth century. His scholarly writings focused on foundational theological matters including the nature of divine unity (tawhid), the boundaries of worship ('ibadah), and the proper understanding of innovation (bid'ah) and shirk - themes addressed in The 20 Principles of Guidance. He represented the mainstream Sunni scholarly tradition of his era, emphasizing adherence to the four Sunni legal schools and devotion to the Prophet sallallahu alayhi wa sallam. He passed away in Bareilly in 1880.
