About
Shaykh Nur al-Din Itr rahimahullah (1937-2020) was among the most distinguished hadith scholars of the contemporary era. Born in Aleppo, Syria in 1937, he received his early education at the Khusrawiyya school, where he was shaped by the scholarly environment of his family and in particular by his maternal uncle and father-in-law, the celebrated Shaykh Abdullah Sirajuddin al-Husayni (1924-2002). He pursued advanced studies at al-Azhar University in Cairo, where he completed a doctoral dissertation on the methodology of Imam al-Tirmidhi in his Jami, a pioneering work in hadith studies. He subsequently served as a professor at the Islamic University of Madina from 1965 to 1967, before returning to Damascus, where he was appointed to the Faculty of Revealed Law at Damascus University and later headed the Faculty for Qur'anic and Hadith Sciences. A Hanafi scholar of Hasani descent, he produced more than sixty works across hadith methodology, Qur'anic sciences, sirah, and fiqh, the most celebrated being his Manhaj al-Naqd fi Ulum al-Hadith (The Methodology of Critique in the Sciences of Hadith). Among his English-translated works available through Heritage Press are Hajj and Umrah: The Pilgrim's Companion and Loving the Messenger of Allah.
