Professor Nurhan Atasoy is a leading scholar of Turkish and Islamic art. She completed her PhD in Fine Arts and Art History at Istanbul University in 1962 and subsequently established herself as a prominent authority on Ottoman material culture. She serves as resident scholar at the Turkish Cultural Foundation, where she regularly lectures on Turkish art, and has presented her research at congresses throughout the world. Her curatorial work includes numerous international exhibitions on Ottoman art and culture. Over the course of her career she has authored more than one hundred articles and twenty-two books, among them Iznik: Ottoman Pottery of Turkey (1989), IPEK: Imperial Ottoman Silks and Velvets (2001), and Impressions of Ottoman Culture in Europe (2012). Her scholarship on Ottoman textiles, ceramics, and portraiture places her among the foremost authorities on the visual and material heritage of the Ottoman Empire.
