About
Peter Sanders began his career in the mid-1960s as one of London's leading photographers of rock musicians, producing iconic images of Bob Dylan, Jimi Hendrix, The Doors, The Rolling Stones, and The Who. In 1970 he set off for India on a seven-month journey that became a spiritual odyssey, leading him to Morocco and then to the holy cities of Makka and Madina, where he photographed the Hajj at a time when few professional photographers had access to Islam's holiest sanctuaries. He was subsequently commissioned by the King of Morocco's Ministry to document all the important mosques, madrasas, and zawiyas of Morocco, a project for which he was given access to the whole country over a four-year period. This archive of images forms the basis for a series of books and exhibitions. He has exhibited his work around the world for decades and his fine art prints continue to be sought after. His photographic books, including 'In the Shade of the Tree' and 'Meetings With Mountains,' combine his artistic sensibility with an intimate engagement with the Islamic world.
