About
Qari Muhammad Tayyab rahimahullah (d. 1983) occupied a uniquely authoritative position within the Deobandi tradition. The grandson of Mawlana Muhammad Qasim Nanawtawi (d. 1880), founder of Dar al-'Ulum Deoband, he was also the son of Mawlana Hafiz Muhammad Ahmad (d. 1930), who himself served as the institution's chancellor before him. Qari Muhammad Tayyab memorized the Qur'an in two years at the age of nine and graduated from Deoband as a fully qualified 'alim in 1918. He went on to serve as chancellor (muhtamim) of Dar al-'Ulum Deoband for more than half a century, earning the honorific Hakim al-Islam - Physician of Islam. Among his teachers was Mawlana Anwar Shah Kashmiri (d. 1933), one of the preeminent hadith masters of that era, from whom and from other prominent scholars he received ijazah in hadith transmission. His book on the methodology of Deoband draws on this lifetime of intimate experience at the center of one of the most influential Islamic educational institutions of the modern period.
