About
R. Kevin Jaques is Associate Professor of Islamic Studies at Indiana University, where his research focuses on Islamic legal history with particular emphasis on the Shafi'i school. His scholarly monograph 'Authority, Conflict, and the Transmission of Diversity in Medieval Islamic Law' was published by Brill in 2006 and examines how diversity of legal opinion was transmitted and negotiated within the Islamic tradition. His 2010 monograph centered on the murder of the Shafi'i judge Najm al-Din ibn Hijji (d. 1427), a contemporary of Ibn Hajar al-Asqalani - the subject of his contribution to the Makers of Islamic Civilization series published by Oxford University Press. His work offers close examination of legal networks and scholarly life in the medieval Islamic world.
