About
R.W.J. Austin (Robert W.J. Austin) was a British scholar specializing in Islamic mysticism and the thought of Muhyi al-Din Ibn Arabi rahimahullah. He is best known for producing English translations of two of Ibn Arabi's major works: 'The Bezels of Wisdom' (Fusus al-Hikam), published in the Classics of Western Spirituality series, and 'Sufis of Andalusia' (Ruh al-Quds). These translations brought the metaphysical and spiritual teachings of Ibn Arabi to a broad English-speaking audience and remain foundational texts in Western academic study of Sufism. Austin's expertise in Islamic spirituality is reflected in his contribution of the foreword to 'Outline of Sufism: The Essentials of Islamic Spirituality,' situating him within the tradition of Western scholarly engagement with the Sufi sciences.
