Riyad Asvat

Dr. Riyad Asvat earned his Doctor of Philosophy from the University of Melbourne. His research spans Sufism, Islamic philosophy, economics, political science, sociology, Islamic law, and Islamic trade and commerce. His published works include The Political Philosophy of Shaykh 'Abd al-Qadir al-Sufi; Commercial Transactions of the Sarrafs (Moneychangers); Awqaf al-nuqud (cash waqfs) in the Ottoman Caliphate; Economic Justice and Shari'a in the Islamic State; and Sufism - The Living Tradition. He has presented papers at several international academic conferences. At a conference organized by Sidi Mohamed Ben Abdellah University in Fez, Morocco - themed "The Maliki School of Jurisprudence and its Contemporary Manifestations" - he presented a paper entitled "The Implications of Maliki Methodology for the Social Sciences."
