About
Ruqayyah Waris Maqsood (born 1942, born Rosalyn Rushbrook) is a British Muslim author and educator. She served as Head of Religious Studies at William Gee High School in Hull, England, where she taught for many years. In 2001, she was among the first UK Muslims to receive a Muslim News Award for Excellence, earning the Muhammad Iqbal Award for Creativity in Islamic Thought, largely in recognition of her work in education. Her writing spans Islamic guidance for a general audience, including works on Muslim marriage, interfaith understanding, and the challenges facing Muslim youth. She has a particular interest in Islamic history, especially the lives of the female companions of the Prophet ﷺ, and in the genealogies and family connections of the early Muslim community. Her advocacy work has addressed forced marriage, child marriage, and other abuses affecting Muslim women. She describes herself as a moderate Muslim committed to promoting accurate knowledge of Islam.
