About
Dr. Safaruk Zaman Chowdhury is a British Muslim scholar whose work spans Islamic theology, Sufism, metaphysics, and philosophy. He studied philosophy at King's College London, receiving the Associate of King's College (AKC) award, before traveling to Cairo to complete the traditional Islamic sciences curriculum at al-Azhar University. Returning to the United Kingdom, he earned his MA with distinction at the School of Oriental and African Studies (SOAS), University of London, followed by a PhD in Islamic Studies with a specialism in Sufism from the same institution. His research interests encompass paraconsistent logic, metaphysics, ethics, and epistemology as articulated within the classical Islamic intellectual tradition, particularly within kalam theology. He is affiliated with Cambridge Muslim College, Whitethread Institute in London, and serves as a faculty member at the Ibn Rushd Centre for Excellence for Islamic Research in Birmingham; he has also served as Academic Director at the Centre of Islamic Knowledge (CIK) in Canada. He is lead researcher on Beyond Foundationalism: New Horizons in Muslim Analytic Theology, a project funded by the John Templeton Foundation in association with Cambridge Muslim College and Aziz Foundation. Among his authored works is Islamic Theology and the Problem of Evil (AUC Press, 2021) and A Sufi Apologist of Nishapür: The Life and Thought of Abu Abd al-Rahman al-Sulami (2019). His translations include three volumes in Turath Publishing's Al-Arba'in series: the Forty Hadiths of Shah Wali Allah al-Dihlawi, the Forty Hadiths on the Excellence of the Qur'an by Mulla Ali al-Qari, and the Forty Hadiths on Loving the Noble Family of the Prophet ﷺ by Muhammad ibn Jafar al-Kattani.
