About
Shah Wali Allah Ahmad ibn Abd al-Rahim al-Dihlawi rahimahullah (1114-1176 AH / 1703-1762 CE) stands as one of the most towering figures in the intellectual history of Islam in the Indian subcontinent. Born in the Dihlawi scholarly tradition, he traced his lineage to the Prophet Muhammad ﷺ and received his primary education in hadith and Islamic sciences under his father, Shah Abd al-Rahim. As a young man he traveled to the Hijaz and spent approximately fourteen months in Makka and Madina pursuing advanced studies with the leading scholars of the two holy cities, most notably Shaykh Abu Tahir al-Kurdi al-Madani, through whom he transmitted the hadiths in his 'Al-Arba'in.' He returned to Delhi and devoted the rest of his life to scholarship and teaching, producing approximately fifty works in Arabic, Persian, and related disciplines. These include 'Hujjat Allah al-Baligha,' his most celebrated work synthesizing hadith and jurisprudence; an early Persian translation of the Qur'an; works on Islamic legal methodology; and treatises on Sufi metaphysics. His scholarship bridged the hadith tradition and rational Islamic sciences, leaving an enduring legacy that shaped subsequent generations of Indian Muslim scholarship.
