About
Shams al-Din Ahmad ibn Kamal Pasha rahimahullah (d. 940 AH / 1534 CE), widely known as Kemal Pashazade or Ibn Kamal, was one of the most distinguished scholars of the Ottoman period. He rose to the highest religious office in the empire, serving as Shaykh al-Islam under both Sultan Selim I and Sultan Suleyman the Magnificent. A leading Hanafi jurist and Maturidi theologian, he produced a remarkable breadth of scholarship covering fiqh, kalam (theology), tafsir, hadith, and the Arabic linguistic sciences. His treatise comparing the Ash'ari and Maturidi schools of Sunni theology remains a valuable classical reference for students of Islamic creedal studies. Ibn Kamal is regarded as one of the towering intellectual figures of the Ottoman scholarly tradition.
