About
Shams al-Din ibn Tulun al-Salihi al-Dimashqi al-Hanafi (880-953 AH / 1475-1546 CE) rahimahullah was one of the most prolific scholars in the history of Damascus. A committed adherent of the Hanafi legal school, he was a major figure in the scholarly life of Mamluk-era and early Ottoman Damascus. He studied under prominent scholars of his time and transmitted hadith through reliable chains. His written output was extraordinary in both volume and breadth, spanning hadith collections, historical chronicles, biographical dictionaries, works on jurisprudence, and more. He is best known to later readers through his historical and biographical writings about Damascus, which remain important primary sources. His 'The Forty Hadith on Mercy and Those Who Show Mercy' represents his contribution to the classical arba'in genre of hadith compilation. Ibn Tulun died in Damascus in 953 AH / 1546 CE.
