About
Shuayb Eric Winkel is an American scholar and translator whose life's work is the first complete English rendering of the Futuhat al-Makkiyya, the monumental "Meccan Openings" of Muhyiddin Ibn al-ʿArabi (d. 638 AH / 1240 CE), the Shaykh al-Akbar. Winkel studied religion at Haverford College and South Asian studies at the University of Pennsylvania, and completed a doctorate at the University of South Carolina. He served as a Senior Research Fellow at the Institute of Advanced Islamic Studies in Malaysia and as a Senior Fulbright Scholar in Indonesia before dedicating himself fully, from 2012 onward, to the Futuhat Project.

The Futuhat comprises thirty-seven books in all, and Winkel's translation, "The Openings Revealed in Makkah," presents them in successive volumes with detailed commentary, drawing on years of close work with classical Arabic and with the manuscript tradition. Volume one appeared in 2019. His earlier publications include "Islam and the Living Law: The Ibn al-ʿArabi Approach" and a translation of the "Mysteries of Purity," along with the recent "An Illustrated Guide to Ibn Arabi." His fascination with the Andalusian master began in his youth, and the translation has since become a collaborative undertaking with editors, a publisher, and proofreaders supporting the steady release of new volumes.
