Siman Nuurali

About
Siman Nuurali is a Somali American author best known for the Sadiq series of early chapter books for young readers, published by Picture Window Books, a Capstone imprint, and illustrated by Anjan Sarkar. Born in Kenya and now settled in Minnesota with her family, she came to children's writing almost by chance, responding to a call from Capstone seeking Somali American authors after years of writing private short stories and poetry. The Sadiq series grew from that contract and has become her signature work.

The books follow Sadiq, a third grader living in a Minnesota neighborhood with his Somali family, whose gentle adventures revolve around home, school friends, and the wider community. Aimed at readers aged six to eight, titles include Sadiq and the Desert Star, Sadiq and the Pet Problem, Sadiq and the Green Thumbs, Sadiq and the Clean Water Crew, Sadiq and the Community Garden, and Sadiq and the Perfect Play. Drawing on her own heritage, Nuurali writes stories that mirror the everyday lives of Muslim and Somali children, themes of friendship, problem solving, and belonging carried in accessible, affirming prose. Her work has been recognized for bringing diverse, relatable voices to early readers, offering children a window onto a young Muslim protagonist navigating ordinary joys and challenges.
