About
Imam Abu al-Husayn Yahya b. Abi al-Khayr b. Salim al-Imrani al-Yamani al-Shafi'i (489-558 AH / 1096-1163 CE), rahimahullah, was the leading Shafi'i jurist of Yemen during the Sulayhid period. Working at the height of that era, he drew upon the foundational Shafi'i heritage of Iraq and Khurasan to produce al-Bayan fi Madhhab al-Imam al-Shafi'i, a fourteen-volume encyclopedic survey of Shafi'i positions. The work covers worship, transactions, marriage, criminal law, and judicial procedure, treating diverse legal opinions and rare subsidiary questions that more concise manuals bypass. Al-Bayan stands as the largest Shafi'i legal treatise composed in Yemen and one of the most comprehensive works within the madhhab as a whole, preserving positions from the Iraqi and Khurasani Shafi'i streams that might otherwise have been lost.
