About The Author
Bediuzzaman Said Nursi was born in 1877 in eastern Turkey and died in 1960 in Urfa in Turkey. Readers may refer to his biography for details of his long and exemplary life, which spanned the last decades of the Ottoman Empire. Bediuzzaman displayed an extraordinary intelligence and ability to learn from an early age, completing the normal course of madrasa (religious school) education at the early age of fourteen, when he obtained his diploma.
He became famous for both his prodigious memory and his unbeaten record in debating with other religious scholars. Another characteristic Bediuzzaman displayed from an early age was an instinctive dissatisfaction with the existing education system, which when older he formulated into comprehensive proposals for its reform. Contrary to the practice of religious scholars at that time, Bediuzzaman himself studied and mastered almost all the physical and mathematical sciences.

Bediuzzaman Said Nursi: Said Nursi (1877-1960 CE) was a Kurdish Muslim scholar and theologian whose life spanned the final decades of the Ottoman Empire and the early Turkish Republic. Born in the village of Nurs in Bitlis province in eastern Anatolia, he showed extraordinary intelligence from childhood, completing the standard course of religious study while still young and earning, from his teachers and rivals alike, the title Bediuzzaman, the Wonder of the Age. He became renowned for his memory and his skill in scholarly debate. Nursi lived through war, political upheaval, and the aggressive secularization of Turkey, and he gave his life to defending Islamic belief against the rising materialism and unbelief of his time. His central achievement is the Risale-i Nur, the Epistle of Light, a Qurʾanic commentary running to several thousand pages, much of it composed during long years of internal exile, surveillance, and imprisonment. Rather than mere exegesis, the work argues for the reasonableness of faith and the harmony of the Qurʾan with the natural sciences, addressing doubt at its root. Circulated quietly by hand among his students, the Risale-i Nur gave rise to the broad Nur movement (Nurculuk) that continues to shape Muslim intellectual life in Turkey and beyond. He died in Urfa in 1960.

Ali Unal: Ali Unal (b. 1955 CE, Usak, Turkey) is a Turkish author, journalist, and prolific translator who has worked to make Islamic thought accessible to English-speaking readers. A graduate of Ataturk University, he spent much of his career in journalism, serving for years as a leading columnist at the Zaman newspaper. Over his career he has produced roughly twenty translations from Turkish into English, alongside more than twenty of his own books in Turkish on faith, worship, and the Islamic worldview. He is best known for The Qurʾan with Annotated Interpretation in Modern English, first published in 2006. The work pairs a contemporary, readable translation with extensive annotations, giving particular attention to the occasions of revelation (asbab al-nuzul) and to themes such as evidence for God's existence and the purpose of human life, while drawing explanatory material from recognized works of tafsir. The translation has been widely circulated and praised for its clarity, with reviewers also noting that its abundant parenthetical glosses make for a heavily annotated text. Among his other writings are The Resurrection and the Afterlife, An Introduction to Islamic Faith and Thought, and 25 Remedies for the Sick, along with translations of works by the Turkish scholar and preacher Fethullah Gulen. His output reflects a steady aim of presenting traditional Islamic teaching in modern, approachable English.
