About the author

Abdallah ibn Alawi al-Haddad: A scholar, Sufi master, and poet of the Hadramawt valley in Yemen, al-Haddad (1044–1132 AH / 1634–1720 CE) was born and lived his whole life in the town of Tarim, where his tomb is still visited. He descended from the Prophet through the Ba ʿAlawi sayyids of Hadramawt, followed the Shafiʿi school in law and the Ashʿari creed, and is widely regarded as the renewer (mujaddid) of the twelfth Islamic century. Though he lost his sight in childhood, he became one of the most influential teachers of the Ba ʿAlawi tradition, drawing on al-Ghazali and the earlier masters of Tarim. He wrote with a clarity that made deep matters accessible, and several of his books are still read daily. Landmark works include al-Nasaʾih al-Diniyya wa al-Wasaya al-Imaniyya (Counsels of Religion), al-Daʿwa al-Tamma wa al-Tadhkira al-ʿAmma (The Complete Summons and General Reminder), Risalat al-Muʿawana (The Book of Assistance), al-Fusul al-ʿIlmiyya, and a Diwan of mystical poetry, alongside his collected letters. His litanies, especially the Ratib al-Haddad and the Wird al-Latif, are recited across the Muslim world. His legacy endures in the living spiritual tradition of Tarim and in English translations that have carried his counsel to new readers.

Rizwana Sayed: Rizwana Sayed is a contemporary translator and compiler who has rendered into English a body of devotional and instructional texts from the Ba 'Alawi tradition, the Sufi path of the sada (descendants of the Prophet) of Hadramawt in Yemen. Much of her work appears through Sakina Publishing in the United Kingdom, prepared under the guidance of Shaykh Muhammad Sadiq al-'Alawi, and centers on making the litanies, supplications, and poetry of this path accessible to English-speaking readers while preserving the Arabic text alongside.\n\nHer translations include "A Means for the Devout to the Ratib al-Haddad," an abridged commentary on the celebrated litany of Imam 'Abdallah ibn 'Alawi al-Haddad, as well as collections of salutations, daily litanies, and the "Qasa'id of Tariqa Sada Ba 'Alawi," a selection of the more celebrated devotional poems of the path presented with translation and introduction. Her two-volume compilation "The Guide to the Path of Righteousness" sets out the history, development, principles, and leading figures of the Ba 'Alawi tariqa, drawing on the counsel of its classical masters such as Imam al-Haddad. Across these works her aim is consistent: to convey the ethics, doctrine, and daily spiritual practice of this Yemeni lineage faithfully for a modern readership. Muhammad Sadiq al-Alawi: Muhammad Sadiq al-Alawi is a contemporary scholar and devotional author working within the BaʿAlawi tradition, the spiritual path carried by the sayyids of Hadramawt in Yemen and their students across the Muslim world. He traveled the path under the guidance of the Hadrami master Habib Ahmad Mashhur bin Taha al-Haddad (1907-1995), a teacher whose gentle, traditional Islam shaped a generation of seekers. His writing gathers around a single devotional center, the love of the Prophet Muhammad and the practice of sending salutations (salawat) upon him. His best-known work, the two-volume "Key to Arriving at the Door of the Messenger," was first composed in Urdu and weaves the author's own prose and poetry together with the discourses and verse of earlier saints, alongside well-established invocations and salutations. In "Salutations of the Prophetic Portrait for the Vision of the Beloved," a 388-page contribution to the shamaʾil genre, he is noted for carrying the reader from the Prophet's outward description toward his inward spiritual reality. Other works include "Daily Salutations upon the Best of Creation," a bilingual Arabic-English collection of salawat composed for the daily recitation of his students, and shorter devotional treatises on sainthood and the love of the righteous. Together his books reflect a working teacher's concern for the everyday spiritual life of his students.
