This short treatise on 'Aqida (Islamic theology) written by Imam al-Tahawi though small in size, is a basic text for all times, listing what a Muslim must know and believe.
The importance of this text lies in the fact that it corroborates the views of Imam Abu Hanifa the founder of the Hanafi school of jurisprudence, which has come down to us from different sources. al-Tahawi: Imam Abu Ja'far Ahmad ibn Muhammad al-Tahawi rahimahullah (c. 239-321 AH / c. 853-933 CE) was born in the village of Taha in upper Egypt into an affluent family. He commenced his Islamic education under his maternal uncle, Isma'il ibn Yahya al-Muzani, one of the foremost disciples of Imam al-Shafi'i. Around the age of twenty, he transferred from the Shafi'i school to the Hanafi school, a move his biographers ascribe to the greater appeal Abu Hanifa's legal reasoning held for his critical insight. He studied under Ahmed ibn Abi Ibrahim, head of the Hanafis in Egypt, who had himself studied under Abu Yusuf and Muhammad al-Shaybani - the two primary students of Abu Hanifa. In 268 AH/882 CE he traveled to Syria for further studies in Hanafi law and became a student of the chief judge of Damascus. He went on to gain an extraordinary mastery of hadith. He is best known for al-'Aqida al-Tahawiyya, a concise creedal statement of Sunni doctrine that has been taught and commentated upon across the centuries, and for his encyclopedic Sharh Ma'ani al-Athar, an authoritative work in hadith and Hanafi jurisprudence.

Fahim Hoosen: Mawlana Fahim Hoosen hafidhahullah was born in 1975 in Stanger, KwaZulu-Natal, South Africa. He completed the memorization of the Qur'an in 1989 and thereafter graduated from Madrasa Taleemuddeen, Isipingo Beach in 2000. His teachers at the madrasa included Mufti Ebrahim Salejee, Mufti Zubair Bayat, Mufti Ebrahim Desai, Mawlana Haroon Abbasomar, and Mawlana Ilyas Patel. From 2002 he taught at Madrasa Hamidiyya, Overport (Durban), where his subjects included Arabic grammar, Islamic law, principles of Islamic law, Qur'anic exegesis, and Islamic theology. He completed a BA with Honours in Semitic Languages and Cultures at the University of Johannesburg (2008-2010) and was certified as a Shariah Advisor and Auditor (CSAA) by the Accounting and Auditing Organization for Islamic Financial Institutions (AAOIFI) in 2010. He is the author of Anis al-Musafir, an explanation of the Hanafi law of travel.
