About the author
Ali al-Qari: Nur al-Din Abu al-Hasan Ali ibn Sultan Muhammad al-Harawi al-Qari (d. 1014 AH / 1606 CE), commonly known as Mulla Ali al-Qari, was a Hanafi scholar and polymath counted among the foremost hadith masters of the eleventh Islamic century. Born in Herat, in present-day Afghanistan, he received his early education there before traveling to Makka, where he studied with leading teachers of the Two Sanctuaries, including Ibn Hajar al-Haytami. He chose to remain in Makka, teaching, writing, and reportedly earning his living by transcribing Qurʾans in his fine hand. His mastery of Qurʾanic recitation earned him the title al-Qari, and he died and was buried in the holy city. A Hanafi in law and Maturidi in creed, he wrote on hadith, fiqh, tafsir, recitation, history, and Sufism, leaving well over one hundred works. His masterpiece is Mirqat al-Mafatih, an expansive commentary on al-Tibrizi's Mishkat al-Masabih that remains a standard reference. In hadith criticism he is known for al-Asrar al-Marfuʿa fi al-Akhbar al-Mawduʿa, a study of fabricated reports, and for his commentary on Abu Hanifa's al-Fiqh al-Akbar. Among his most widely loved works is al-Hizb al-Aʿzam, a daily litany of Qurʾanic verses and prophetic supplications, alongside several Arbaʿun (forty-hadith) collections still read and translated today.

Over many years he has rendered major Urdu and Arabic religious works into clear, accessible English, helping bring classical and modern scholarship to an English-reading audience. His best-known project is the English translation of Seeratul Mustafa, the celebrated multi-volume biography of the Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) by Mawlana Muhammad Idris Kandhlawi, a work widely regarded for its depth of research and reliance on original sources. Produced together with Mufti Muhammad Kadwa, it is available in both the complete three-volume edition and an abridged version. Beyond the Sira, Mahomedy has translated Imam al-Nawawi's classic devotional hadith collection Riyad al-Salihin, the Muntakhab Ahadith compiled by Mawlana Muhammad Yusuf Kandhlawi, and ʿAbd al-Fattah Abu Ghudda's well-loved study Muhammad, the Perfect Teacher, on the Prophet's teaching methods. Working carefully and without ornament, he has made a substantial body of Deobandi and classical Sunni literature available to English readers, and his translations are widely circulated among students of hadith and Sira.
