al-Arbaeen al-Nawawiyya — Imam al-Nawawi's collection of 42 foundational hadiths (the traditional 'forty' being meant generously) — is the universal introductory hadith curriculum of the Sunni world. Each hadith is one of the foundational hadiths from which scholars have traditionally said the entire teaching of Islam can be derived: the hadith of intentions, the hadith of Gabriel (Islam, Iman, Ihsan), the hadith of the believer's lawful and forbidden, the hadith on the doer of evil, the hadith on the Prophet's brotherhood with his followers, and others. The work has been committed to memory by Sunnis in every land for more than seven centuries — typically the first hadith corpus a young Sunni student commits to memory.

More than fifty significant commentaries have been written on the Arbaeen, foremost among them those of Ibn Daqiq al-Id, Ibn Rajab al-Hanbali (his Jami al-Ulum wa al-Hikam is a substantial two-volume work on the collection), and al-Nawawi's own auto-commentary (which forms the basis of subsequent teaching of the matn).

About The Author

Imam Yahya b. Sharaf al-Nawawi (631-676 AH / 1233-1277 CE) was the supreme Shafii authority of the late Ayyubid and early Mamluk Damascus and one of the most influential Sunni scholars in the entire history of the school. His Minhaj al-Talibin is the foundational matn of late Shafii fiqh; his al-Adhkar, Riyad al-Salihin, and al-Arbaeen are among the most-recited devotional works in the entire Sunni canon; his commentaries on Sahih Muslim and his Bustan al-Arifin span the disciplines of hadith and tasawwuf.

الأربعون النووية — مَجموعةُ الإمام النووي من ٤٢ حديثاً تأسيسياً (والعدد "الأربعون" بالتَّوسعة المُعتادة) — هي المُقَرَّر الأَوَّل العالمي للحديث في العالم السنّي. كلُّ حديثٍ منها من الأحاديث التي قال العلماء إنّ تعليم الإسلام كلَّه يُسْتَنْبَط منها: حديث النيّات، وحديث جبريل (الإسلام والإيمان والإحسان)، وحديث الحلال والحرام، وحديث "مَن أَحْدَث في أَمْرِنا"، وحديث الأخوّة، وغيرها. حُفِظَت الأربعون في كلِّ بلاد السنّة منذ سبعة قرون — هي عادةً أوّل مجموعة حديثية يَحْفَظها الطالب السنّي الصغير. وعليها أكثر من خمسين شرحاً، أَبْرَزها لابن دقيق العيد، وابن رجب الحنبلي (جامع العلوم والحكم في مجلّدَين)، وشرحُ النووي نَفْسه.
